The Absinthe Drinker

This is actually the title of a painting by Édouard Manet, which was painted around 1859 and is not nearly so well known, although according to Wikipedia it's "considered to be [Manet's] first major painting and first original work." Degas' painting was done in 1876, and was originally titled A Sketch of a French Café. After it was exhibited in London in 1893, it came to be known as L'absinthe.

L'absinthe is one of Degas' best–known paintings, but if you're ever asked who (particularly which French impressionist) painted ballet and/or racing scenes, Degas is your man. Even though (according to Wikipedia) he didn't like to be called an impressionist, and preferred 'realist'.
